“In May 1995 I walked into Ivy Hi-Lift looking for a job. Mal hired me on the spot because I was dressed to work and had gloves in my hand. He was old school like that. Just this month an apprentice asked why I became a scaffolder. I told him that my first boss made me feel like a bad ass, like there weren't many people who could do this job but I was one of them. He built you up with a sideways grin and wink, call you sweat heart. I owe most of my identity to him. I never told him that.”
