He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Coates and Sue Coates; and his brother Michael. He is survived by: his wife Sandra Van Wormer; his daughters, Karyn Matthews of Marietta, GA and Naven Salahi of McMinnville, OR; his grandsons, Aidan and Alex Matthews; and his siblings, Josephine McNickle of McMinnville and Ralph Coates of Decatur, GA. He is also survived by three nephews.
