Windsor Calkins Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Windsor Calkins (Eugene, Oregon), who passed away on June 5, 2018, leaving to mourn family and friends. Leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of Windsor Calkins to pay them a last tribute.

I have finished all my files so I think I can go play some golf, maybe with Dad." Windsor Dean Calkins, the son of Windsor Calkins and Doris Helen Calkins, passed away peacefully on June 5th, 2018, at the age of 73 years. A descendant of the Dillards and the Pattersons who arrived in Oregon by wagon train in the 1850s, "Win" followed his family passions in the law and in music. Win was born in Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene - the very hospital system that his grandfather SM Calkins helped the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace establish in 1936. He graduated from South Eugene High School, the University of Oregon from the Clarke Honors College with a degree in Sociology and a minor in German, then on to Willamette Law School in Salem for his law degree. The Vietnam War draft interrupted his law school education temporarily and he attained the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserve. In 1975, Win married Judy VanCleave. Upon returning to Eugene after passing the Oregon State Bar exam in 1971, Win joined his father in the practice of law and devoted his life to serving the medical community of Eugene in continuing to represent the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace hospitals in Oregon, the physicians, the nurses, the Lane County Medical Society, Volunteers in Medicine, and other health care providers until his retirement in 2011. Win also continued to represent, as General Counsel, the Eugene Water & Electric Board, as his father had done since 1949. In 1988, Win was honored to be made a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, and became among the select few in the nation to be a Fellow with his father, Windsor Calkins, at the same time. Win was particularly proud of his work as editor of the Oregon State Bar CLE books on Tort Law in Oregon, and his tenure as an Oregon Commissioner on Uniform State Laws. He was a member and served on the board of the Oregon Association of Defense Counsel, chair of the Goodwill Industries of Lane County, chair of the Oregon Mozart Players, chair and member of the University of Oregon Advisory Council to the College of Arts and Sciences. Win grew up with harps and decided at an early age to play the flute instead. However, he and his father still moved his mother and sister Sally's harps for their many musical performances in the community. He dearly loved golf, skiing, swimming, sailing, tennis, fishing, hiking, bicycling, corny jokes, following the Ducks, and challenging his children and their friends to try new activities. Win is survived by his wife, Judy, daughter Sarah Kelly (son-in-law Ryan Kelly), granddaughter Helaena Kelly, son Russell (daughter-in-law Nicole Michaelis), niece Martha Maxwell Griffith, nephew Winston James Maxwell, grandniece Emilie Maxwell, grandnephew Florian Maxwell, and grandnephew Mile Griffith. Donations may be made in his memory to the Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation, or to a . Judy and his family want to thank the care staff at Elder Health & Living, in Springfield, for assisting them to take care of Win as he battled the physical and mental challenges of Parkinson's Disease. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date to be announced later.
