He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Bates and Minnie Bates; and his siblings, J. C., Cleo, Vivian and Charles Jr..
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Garrison; and his children, David Bates, Janiece Callis and Lenora Curtis. He is also survived by spouses, 16 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
