He was predeceased by: his parent John R.. He is survived by: his parent Alma Cook Smith; his children, Chet R. Smith, Jr. (Bonnie Jean) of Fairfax, VA, Anne Smith of Eugene and Deborah Lynn Smith (Ronald) of Southern Pines, NC; his grandchildren, Todd Smith (Jennifer) and Michael Smith (Regina); and his great grandchildren, Parker, Madison, Emily Smith and Reagan Smith.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
