Marie Ann McMillion Obituary
Marie McMillion’s life, one woven with joy, wit, and kindness, concluded as gently as it had been lived.
Born in May of 1942, in Wilmington, Delaware, Marie’s story unfolded with an adventurous train ride to Los Angeles, setting the tone for a life marked by curiosity and a zest for living.
As a teen, Marie was as one of LA’s first female surfers. This enthusiasm and joy infused her later life, from Northern California to Portland, and finally, Beaverton.
Marie’s wit shone in her love for wordplay, a gift she joyously shared with her children and grandchildren in songs, poems, and silliness.
Despite mobility challenges in later life, she ventured out daily, engaging the world with a smile, making friends, and penning heartfelt letters to loved ones near and far.
Her compassion extended well beyond her family. As a caregiver for the elderly, Marie embraced everyone with love and humility, listening to their stories and sharing in their lives.
In a year of remarkable dedication, she crocheted a knit cap every day, gifting 365 caps to the homeless via a local shelter, each a testament to her caring heart.
A highlight of her early life was meeting Stan Laurel, Moe Howard, and Walt Disney, memories cherished as snapshots of a life filled with extraordinary moments.
Marie leaves behind a legacy carried by her children - Michael, Matthew, Molly, and Mary, her sister Arline, eight grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends.
Her ethical vegetarianism and support for animal rescue organizations reflected her deep compassion for all creatures.
Marie’s soul was nourished by literature and regular visits to libraries and bookstores. This passion for reading enriched her life and all her conversations.
She had the gift of making lifelong friends, remembering each story with uncanny clarity, a testament to the deep connections she made and nurtured.
Her favorite saying, “Don’t cry because it’s over - smile because it happened,” reflects a life beautifully lived.
Marie McMillion, a beacon of light and love, may have left this world, but her spirit endures in the myriad hearts she touched and the lives she brightened
Marie’s journey now reunites her with husband David, her sister Irene, her parents Pauline and George, as well as her many grandparents, cousins, and countless dearly loved animal friends furry and feathered, of all colors, shapes, and sizes.
Donations in Marie’s honor may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org).
