He was predeceased by: his parents, John Espeland and Olga Espeland; and his sister Diane Tipple. He is survived by: his close friend Bruce Levy; his siblings, Steve Espeland (Charlotte), Jim Espeland (Mui), Karen Espeland and Sharon Carter (Virgil); and his brother-in-law William Tipple.

Upon his death he donated his tissues and organs to help others.
