Ray Arvid Field Obituary
Ray Arvid Field passed away Friday, June 9th at his home in Baker City, Oregon.
Ray was born December 15, 1933 in Ogden, Utah, the son of Vernon James and Leona Oleson Field. Early years of his life were spent in Slaterville, and West Point, Utah . He graduated from Davis High and Weber College and spent two years as a missionary in the New England States Mission.
He met his wife, Carol Gleason at BYU. They were married September 20th 1958, 3 days after Ray returned from being chosen to work with the National Livestock and Meat Board for the summer. Ray and Carol moved to Lexington, Kentucky where he earned his Masters and PhD degrees. Two of their children were born there.
Following graduation Ray became a Professor at the University of Wyoming
in Laramie. Dr. Field spearheaded the University of Wyoming’s efforts in formal meat
science teaching, research, and extension. Three more children were born in Laramie.
They lived in Laramie except for sabbatical leaves at Michigan State University and NZ Ruakura Research Center. In 2004 they moved to Baker City, Oregon where they ranched.
Ray loved inviting others to share in his love of farming. He gave many children their first or only horse ride, and enjoyed it at least as much as they did.
He was grateful to serve as a full-time missionary in both the New England States and later Nairobi Kenya Africa with his eternal companion. They were also Denver Temple workers
for 10 years. He served in many positions in church which refined his Christlike character.
He’s remembered as a supportive brother, friend, a faithful companion and valiant servant
of the Lord.
Ray is survived by his wife, Carol Gleason Field; his brother, Dean Field; 4 children and their spouses, Jim (Crystal) Field, Linda (Nikolaus) Despain, David (Candy) Field, and Michael (Kayleen) Field and 16 grandchildren, and 31 great grandchildren.
