He was predeceased by: his mother Charlene Thompson; and his father-in-law Ronald Duke. He is survived by: his wife Ronda Shell; his children, Amy Day (Ryan) and Steven Shell (Natalie); his grandchildren, Samantha, Tyler and Drew; his siblings, Todd Shell, Charlotte Soape and Suzy; his brother-in-law Rob Trimble; his mother-in-law Virginia Duke; his brother-in-law Dennis Duke; his sister Lydia; and his brother-in-law Mike Jaremko. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

With a bachelor's degree under his belt, he made significant contributions to the oil and gas industry.
