He was predeceased by: his parents, LeRoy Mercer and Ruby Mercer (Ethel "Kathy" Mercer); his son Steven Strain; and his sister Earline Givins. He is survived by: his wife Ethel Kathleen Bunch; his children, Mary Clagg and Donald Strain, Jr.; and his brother Doyle Mercer. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
