He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Milton and Grace Macy Stephens Coats. He is survived by: his wife Imogene Martindale; his son David Lee (Darla) of Salina; his grandsons, Carl (Rebekah) of Tahlequah and Joshua (Abigail) of Fairbanks; and his great grandchildren, Addison Grace and Emilia Kathryn of Tahlequah. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
