He was predeceased by: his parents, Carter Temple and Grace Laverne Vandergriff Bates; and his stepfather Jack Gibbons. He is survived by: his wife Virginia; his son Michael Bates; and his stepchildren, Cheryl Laflin, Lisa Ziriax, Holly Nester and James Todd.
