He was predeceased by: his parents, Elizabeth Schaefer (Leona) and John Schaefer of Okarche; his wife Carolyn Ann Dvorak Schaefer; and his siblings, Francis, Bill, Gene, Robert and Beatrice.

He is survived by: his children, Diana Tremaine (Keith Iott), Lisa Chance (Scott Chance) and Brent Schaefer; his grandchildren, Tanner, Kayla, Brittney, Alexa, Greyson and Gage; his great grandchildren, Sloane, Van, Harper and Jackson; and his siblings, Mike, Judy, Elizabeth, Janet and Linda.

In lieu flowers, donations may be made in remembrance of Karl to the American Cancer Society or to St. Vincent DePaul Society of the poor.
