He was predeceased by: his parents, Otho Stanley Tate (Gertrude Stevens Tate) and Love Field Airport; his siblings, Clifford and Lorene; and his brother-in-law Hoyt Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Janet Tate; his sons, James Jr. (Belinda) of Norman and Greg Tate of Norman; his daughter-in-law Julie Dixon Tate of Norman; his sons, Carter Tate of Norman and Blair Tate (Staci) of Kansas City; his grandchildren, James III (Jamie), Chris, Katie, Drew, Brooks, Logan, Sky and Corey; and his great grandchild Adalene.
