“Matthew, I don't know how to articulate what you have been to me. You became my brother when we were too young to feel any self-consciousness about our new roles in each others lives. We had the rare gift of having someone our own age to play and grow with just a few feet away. We went to preschool and started kindergarten together, learned to tie our shoes, ride our bikes without training wheels, attempt cooking (oh my GOD, we sucked. Did you ever work that out? I didn't.)You were always there.”

“Now you aren't, and though it has been a long time since I have seen you, I feel that loss. You were such a huge part of my life at that fundamental time of growth, learning, and exploration - the time when we were learning the world and ourselves - that I feel unbalanced knowing that you aren't there as a counterweight to me anymore. I have so many memories, starting with a yellow rose to precede our first meeting to "sharptooths" and mud (SO. MUCH. MUD), obstacle courses, cheesebread rings, UNO, chess, kittens...”

So many beginnings. I remember when you started fishing. I remember when you started wearing hats everywhere. I remember when you busted you head open. Again. And AGAIN. I remember when you broke your tooth. Again. And AGAIN. I remember how bored I was when you had the chicken pox.”

“I remember family dinners at that one Chinese buffet in the mall right next to the nail salon - those dinners were some of my favorites. I remember all the trips to Wal-Mart when it was still a part of the mall. I remember all the trips to Lowes as a family (what were they even LOOKING at all those times?) I remember you liked butter pecan ice-cream from Braums (Mint. Chocolate. Chip. My Dude.). I remember peaceful trips to parks and the occasional swim in the lake. I remember the LONG drives back and forth to Michigan crammed together in the backseat...”

I remember you were there when I suffered the first two greatest losses of my life (you are the third, but... maybe you are here in spirit one last time for old times sake?)
