He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel B. Merrifield III and Doris M. Merrifield (Fultz); and his daughter Ashley. He is survived by: his wife Mary Lou Pickey; and his children, Holly, Denny, Chad and Eric. He is also survived by six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; four brothers and two sisters.
