Eugene Russell Mingle Obituary
Former long-time Guymon resident, Eugene Mingle, passed away on November 13, 2018, at the age of 97.
He was born in Sterling, Kansas, on April 12, 1921, to John and Beulah Mingle. A graduate of Oakley High School, he attended Kansas State University and was a member of the ROTC. He was called to duty in the US Army where he served in the Infantry in Germany in World War II, attaining the Rank of First Lieutenant. While on leave, he and Mary Ellen Edde were joined in marriage on April 21, 1945, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Kansas. In the latter six months of his tour of duty, he was tasked with returning displaced persons, including Holocaust survivors, into Czechoslovakia.
Upon his return from the War, Gene earned a B.S. in mechanical and petroleum engineering from Kansas State University in 1947. His entire working career was with Cities Service Oil Company as a Production Supervisor, overseeing production and safety on oil wells in Kansas, Michigan, Illinois, and Oklahoma.
In 1961, the family moved to Guymon, where Eugene and Mary settled and lived for almost 45 years. He was always active and enjoyed golfing, tennis, and bowling. He served on the Board of Directors of the High Plains Public Radio Station. He was also a frequent entrant and winner of the Guymon Daily Herald's weekly football contests.
Throughout their years in Guymon, Eugene and Mary were active in Victory Memorial United Methodist Church, No Man's Land Senior Citizens Club, and the Mr. and Mrs. Garden Club. In 1990, he and Mary were selected by National Gardener Magazine to test garden seeds and plants.
Some of their philanthropic contributions were directed to both their alma mater, Kansas State University, and the University of Kansas (establishing a Scholarship for Young Composers), where Mary had graduated as an R.N.
In honor of his late wife, Mary, Eugene bequeathed his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center to promote medical training and research. Also, in honor of his wife, the Alzheimer's Association has been designated for memorial contributions.
Married 67 years, she preceded him in death in July 2013. He is survived and dearly missed by their six children: Charles (June) of Snellville, GA; Marsha (Art) Pelletier of Dover, NH; John (Lucinda) of Ossining, NY; Ralph (Marsha) of Prairie Village, KS; William (Merry) of Overland Park, KS, and Carolyn Barnes of Las Vegas, NV; their five grandchildren: John Pelletier, Emily Manning-Mingle, Sarah Mingle Lindshield, Katherine Mingle, and Billy Barnes, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at a future date.
