He was predeceased by : his parents, Victor Yager and Elizabeth Helen Smith; and his siblings, Jane DonCarlos, Margaret Cathey, Liz Clark, Wanda Standridge and James A. Smith.

He is survived by : his wife Kay Smith; his children, Sharon Kerr, Patricia Niccum (J. B.) and Joe Smith, II (Kim); and his grandchildren, Clayton Kerr (Taylor) and Ashley Thomas (Josh).
