He was predeceased by: his sons, Michael Clayton and Timmy Clayton; his parents, Calvin Clayton and Lillian Powell; his sister Opal Lee Haynes; and his grandchildren, Joshia Anderson and Joe Clayton, III.
He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Clayton; and his children, Joe Clayton, Jr. (Tammie), Pamela Epps (Raymond), Sharlene Thomas (Willie) and Jackie Anderson (Roy). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
