He was predeceased by: his parents, Truman Rixey Shafer and Fannie Ellen McDaniel; his wife Marlene Shafer; and his siblings, Harold Shafer, Ned Shafer, Ruby Orf, Odessa Marlow and Betty Jenkins.
He is survived by: his children, Susan Elaine, Jerry Wayne, Wade Alan, Susan Howe (Mark) of Virginia, Jerry Shafer (Patricia) and Wade Shafer (Jennifer); and his grandchildren, Eric Hansley, David Hansley, Andrea Schuman (Karl), Kori Eichhron (Tim), Meredith Truss (Tim), Sarah Grisso (Andrew), Derek Shafer and Robbie Shafer.
