He was predeceased by: his parents, Arlie Cates and Georgia Cates; and his sons, Thomas Cecil Cates Jr. and Arlie Clint Cates. He is survived by: his wife Caroline; his daughter Mary Waldrep (Steven); his sister Katherine Louise Yockey; his grandchildren, Josh Vincent (Mindy), Kayla Rankin (Anthony) and Jake Cox; and his great grandchildren, Lilie Cox, Karigan Rankin, A'Marie Rankin and Joseph Rankin.
