He was predeceased by: his parents, T. R. Shafer and Fannie Ellen Shafer (McDaniel); and his siblings, Harold Shafer, Ned Shafer, Kenneth Shafer, Ruby Orf, Odessa Marlow and Betty Jenkins.
He is survived by: his wife Patricia Ann Cunningham; his sons, Tom Shafer of Apache, James Shafer (Shelly) of Apache and John Shafer (Kim) of Mesquite, Texas; his grandchildren, Jessi McCray (Waylon), James Lindsey (Carlie), Dillon Lindsey (Hannah), Mya Shafer, Cole Shafer and Cale Shafer; his great grandchildren, Nic Lindsey, Brandon Lindsey, Zach Lindsey, Jace Daniel Stone, Adi Stone, Lilly Smith, Jaxon Lindsey, Parker Lindsey, Paislee Lindsey, Logan Lindsey, Tucker Lindsey, Micah McCray, Keegan McCray and Rian McCray; and his great great grandchild Colby McCray.
