Well done my good and faithful servant!" Gladys Sawatzky, 91, was welcomed to her new home in Heaven on September 21, 2018. She was preceded in death by her faithful husband and loving parents. The oldest of five children, she was born to Art and Elsie Heidebrecht in December 1926. She grew up on a farm in Corn, Oklahoma driving a tractor and picking cotton. After graduating Corn High School she attended Corn Bible School for a year and took five Bible classes. She began teaching Children's Sunday School when she was 16-years-old at Bergthal Mennonite Church. She married Harry Sawatzky in September 1950 and through the years worked as a cook in school cafeterias and as a church secretary. But her most fulfilling jobs were as mom and homemaker. She and Harry joined Putnam City Baptist Church in February 1958. She faithfully served as a teacher for 1st grade Sunday School and VBS; and as Divisional Director for 1st through 3rd grad Sunday School. She also worked at PCBC as a secretary in the Youth Office and eventually moved to the Educational Office doing computer work for Sunday School and serving as Church Clerk. She enjoyed sewing and she loved cooking and being a hostess to friends and family. Upon retirement, she and Harry traveled the United States in their camper trailer, took several bus trips and even went to Hawaii. Gladys is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Carlotta and David Williams; and her son and daughter-in-law Quentin and Beth Sawatzky. She had six grandchildren: Cameron and Tiffany Williams, Nathan and Janelle Williams, April and Jon Lamb; Andrew and Kelsey Sawatzky, Matthew Sawatzky and Katie Sawatzky. She also had five great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Henry, Samuel, Karsyn and Emerey. She was loved and will be missed by her younger "us kids" siblings: Ervin, Melvin and Norman Heidebrecht and her baby sister Betty Decker. The celebration of Gladys' life will be held at 10:00am Thursday, September 27 at Putnam City Baptist Church. The family will be present to greet friends on Wednesday evening, September 26 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Mercer-Adams. In lieu of flowers, the family requests monetary donations be made to the Next Steps Children's Building Fund at Putnam City Baptist Church.
