He was predeceased by: his parents, Earl Matthews and Thelma Matthews; his brothers, Earl, Charles and Robert; his children, Michael and Stephanie; his in-laws, Bert and Katherine Igoe; and his son Wendell Matthews (Milo).

He is survived by: his granddaughter Chasity; his wife Patricia Matthews (Igoe); and his children, Ashley Katherine Matthews, Constance Wright (Carl) and David Heard. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, as well as his many nieces and nephews.
