He was predeceased by: his parents, Juan Mendel and Sara Mendel (Loredo); and his wife Carmen Mendoza. He is survived by: his children, Juan Valentín and Elizabeth Patricia of Virginia; his sister Esperanza Mendel of Youngstown; his nephews, Bob, Abel Rios and Joe Rios; and his niece Debra Mettee. He is also survived by nephews and nieces, their children and children's children.
He bowled in various leagues and was an active bowler up until the initial Covid shutdown of 2020.
