He was predeceased by: his parents, Wasyl Smereka and Maria Maciurak Smereka. He is survived by: his stepfather Steve Wasylewych; his daughters, Christine "Tina" Smereka of Las Vegas and Teresa Petrilli (Joseph) of Canfield; his sister Irene Kowal of Youngstown; his niece Tanya Hankavich (Jeff); his son John Stephen Smereka; and his stepbrother Roman Wasylewych.
