He was predeceased by: his parents, George Smrek and Mary Smrek Hutira (Granchie); and his siblings, Mary Ellen "Dolly" Ivan and William Smrek. He is survived by: his significant other Rita R. Walihnac; his children, Ron (Melissa), Richard (Linda), Randy (Tracey), Rose Knight (Ray) and Ruth Balestra (Airic); his grandchildren, Michael Smrek, Anne Smrek (Rod Scoville), Mary Smrek, Shannon Christoff (Zach), Brianna Koehler (Tim), Chris Knight, Conner Knight, Nathan Smrek, Emilee Dwyer (Sam) and Natalee Balestra; his great grandchildren, Audrey, Alex, Aiden Christoff, Noah Koehler and Leo Scoville; his sisters, Rita Premec and Mary Ann Lapinski; and his sister-in-law Helen Walihnac.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that material contributions take the form of memorial contributions to either the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, 260 West Federal Street Youngstown, OH, 44503; or, to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
