He was predeceased by: his parents, James Thurston and Dorthy Peffers Tyson; his former wives, Marilyn Tyson (Inman) and Alice Johnson Tyson; his daughter Joye Denise Joseph; his stepson David Shepherd; and his sister Deloris Silvers.

He is survived by: his wife Andrea Shepherd Tyson (Kelble); his daughters, Raynee Lyn Shepherd and Dawn Tyson Kodama (Boyd); his stepdaughters, Karen Staples (Mark), Huber Heights, Rebecca Shepherd and Yellow Springs; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Baker (Allen) of New Carlisle, Christy Crawford (Christopher) of New Carlisle, Benjamin Shepherd (Leah), Ethan Shepherd (Megan), West Carrollton, Jessica Bernacki (Joe), Melanie Hare (Alton), Baltimore, MD, Michael Joseph, Zane Kodama and Levi Kodama; his stepgrandchildren, Sarah Staples, Heather Goss (Adam), Kettering Mascola, Anthony Mascola and Yellow Springs; his great grandchildren, Lucas, Violet, Peyton, Trevor, Garret, Valerie, Ezekiel, Calvin, Beckett, Lilly and Ellianna; and his nieces and nephews, Tonja Morris, Robert Silvers, Jr. and Bryan Silvers.
