Nellie Louise Applegarth Obituary

Nellie Louise (Stewart Turvey) Applegarth entered into eternal rest on March 22, 2017 while peacefully sleeping. She was most certainly immediately surrounded by a host of friends and family welcoming her home and waiting to once again taste her pineapple upside-down cake. Nellie was born on June 1, 1944 in Woodsfield, Ohio to Joseph Stewart and Nellie Huggins. Her maiden name was Turvey, and she loved her dad Bob.

She met Robert “Jack” Applegarth, fell in love, and married him in Haggerstown, Maryland on November 10, 1961. Jack and Nellie had 5 beautiful daughters and one angel son: Robin, Cynthia, Jan, Jennifer, Jackie, and Robert Jr. As a stay-at-home mom, she dedicated her life to her family and watched it grow to include 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Nellie remained a loving wife to Jack for 49 years, until the day he passed. Nellie devoted her life to the service of others. There were no grudges around Nellie and forgiveness was always given without asking. In addition to her own children, she raised her granddaughter, Janell, for a short time, and would care for any child that passed through her doors.
After all, they were always unlocked and open. She had a strong spirit and was a fighter. That was probably what drew Letecia, one of her best friends, to her. Nellie loved to play Bingo, shop, and sip on coffee together with anyone they laughed at her jokes only and she, Nellie radiated joy. She wanted everyone around her to be happy and especially loved making children happy.
Halloween before last, you could find her dressed as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle simply to make her great-granddaughter, Lundin, smile by matching her own costume. With her ponytail sitting atop the crown of her head, she walked the neighborhood with Lundin and acquired bags full of candy. Lundin and Nellie shared a special bond.
Mom shared special moments with all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved all equally.She was fond of Shayden and Aphrodite and Charles.
No matter how tired she was, Nellie perked up when Lundin came in the room and would do anything she asked. Nellie loved the small things in life. She enjoyed watching the clouds roll by and feeling the sunshine on her skin. She loved to read and would often make up stories herself. After stopping to admire a butterfly's wings or a bird in flight, she would weave a fairy tale so vivid it was if one was there to see.

Nellie Applegarth left a lasting impression on anyone she met and will be greatly missed by her friends and family. Her greatest legacy to those remaining is the example she lived. Always forgive, love fiercely, and leave a little sunshine wherever you go. A private memorial service to honor her life will be held at a later date.
