William O’Connell wrote a sympathy message

“Gary was one of my best friends growing up on East 5th Street. Our gang of a half dozen boys lived a Tom Sawyer existence, spending days fishing, swimming, and adventuring on the Ohio River. Gary was the first to own a wooden Jon boat and he could make it fly when on the oars. I’ve never seen a better rower! Gary was athletic and strong with a daredevil spirit. He was the first to do a back flip off the rope swing we built at the river. There is so much more, but it’s time to say goodbye, Gary.”
