He was predeceased by: his parents, James Mathis and Irma Mathis (McNary); and his siblings, Jamey L. Barnett, Paula L. Mathis and Eva L. Williams.

He is survived by: his sons, James Mathis, III (Davina), Gregory Mathis and Elgin Rose; his stepson Eric Rose; and his siblings, Dennis C. Mathis, Jerome F. Mathis, Eric Mathis (Josie), Alan W. Mathis and Celeste R. Mathis.
