He was predeceased by: his father Paul Spoerl; and his sister Amy Spoerl Knoedler. He is survived by: his wife Jane Spoerl (Murphy); his children, Nicole Sargent (Eric) and Thomas Spoerl; his grandson Bentley Sargent; and his brother-in-law Thomas Knoedler.

Contributions in Douglas's honor may be gifted to the Otsego FFA.
