He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie B. Counts and Era Mae Counts (Owens); his wife Billie Todd Counts (Brooks); his daughters, Sylvia Atkinson, Keneeta Northern and Reva Counts; his grandson Daniel Detrick Jr.; and his siblings, Mildred Antle, Pauline Meadors and Robert Counts.

He is survived by: his daughters, Janet Detrick (Dan) and Virlene Roark (Ronald); and his siblings, Cecil Counts, Jerry Counts, Virginia Currenton and Nell Murphy. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
