He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Shields and Dorothy Shields; his son David E. Shields; his grandchildren, Clarissa "Rosie" Vaughn and Joseph Elihu Shields; and his son-in-law Cecil Vaughn.
He is survived by: his wife Pauletta Irene Shields; and his children, Barb Burrows (Ray), James Shields (Ginette), Joyce Vaughn, Steven Shields (Karen), Linda Boyer (Jim Starling) and Glenda Freeman (John).
