He was predeceased by: his sister Ruth Leininger; and his half-sisters, Audrey Clay and Catherine Taylor. He is survived by: his wife Mary Lee Clay (Mihm); and his children, Linda Stutz (John) of Van Wert, Sally Ricker (Paul) of Defiance, Dennis Clay (Mary) of St. Petersburg, David Clay (Ellen) of Fishers, Gary Clay (Melissa), Jane Crawford (Steve), Michael Clay (Linda) of Convoy, Timothy Clay (Jamie) of Orange Park, Melissa "Missy" Clay, Amy Clay and Scott Clay of Convoy. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
