He was predeceased by: his parents, Malcom Richard and Betty Lou Melvin (Phillips); his grandparents, James E, Anna B. Melvin, Merle D. and Luckee Phillips; and his stepson W. C. Midgley.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Louise Melvin (Carpenter); his children, Mary Michelle Schmid (Doug) and Matthew Richard Melvin; his stepsons, W. Allan Midgley (Jennifer) and Todd Midgley; his sister Lou A. Cox (Mike); his grandchildren, Timothy M. Melvin, Mercedes M. Melvin, Malayna J. Melvin, Tanner L. Nichols and Wade Nichols; and his great grandchildren, Maylee, Macyi, Maverick, Blakelynn Melvin, Hensley, Owen Reasor, Parker and Baylor Nichols. He is also survived by several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
