He was predeceased by: his parents, Everett Hayes and Mary Moore Hayes; his children, Kenneth Johnson and Melissa Ann Hayes; and his siblings, J. C. Hayes, R. C. Hayes, Edna Smith, Darlene Neff and Marlene Friend.

He is survived by: his wife Beverly Frisch Hayes of Trenton, Ohio; his children, Joe Crawford of Willard, Ohio, Teresa Whisman of Campton, Sheila Hayes Fields (Jason) of Middletown and Laura Hayes of Trenton, Ohio; and his brothers, George Hayes (Freddie) of Rogers, Roy Hayes (Shirley) of Middletown and Ray Hayes of Hunter, Ohio.. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren.
