He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph M. Downen and Eleanor Naomi Downen (Byers); his son James "Bo" Michael Downen; his granddaughter Terra Joy McDonald; and his siblings, Ronald E. Downen, Sandra A. Shook and Debbie J. Downen.

He is survived by: his wife Anna Irene Blanche Downen (McEwen); his daughters, Wendy Lynn McKee (James) of Hammondsville and Ila Nelson of Follansbee; and his grandchildren, Ted A. A. Davis (Michelle) of Toronto, Samuel D. "McEwen" Abdalla of Toronto and Malinna Star Monroe (Andy) of Rutland, OH. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
