He was predeceased by: his parents, Amelia "Babe" Berning (Rothenbuhler) and Norman Berning; his siblings, Gwendolyn Mennitt, Carol Carver, Richard Berning and Robert Berning; and his stepson Kenneth Carter.
He is survived by: his daughters, Melanie Berning-Nowak (Scott), Cynthia Berning, Dee Wagner (Dan) and Darlene Eichner (John); his stepson Steven Carter; his former wives, Marcia Thompson and Doris Hilkens; and his grandchildren, Ashleigh (Brian), Jeremy (Isobel), Austin, Hayden, Nicole (Nick), Sarah (Mitch), Kenny, Katrina (Adam), Alisha, Heather, Brandon, Sareena, Jenna and Joshua. He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren.
