John James Dooner MD Obituary
John James Thomas Dooner, MD, MS, was born September 4, 1954, in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Dr. John Sr. and Margaret (Barton) Dooner. John attended Portsmouth Abby School, Benedictine Boarding School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where he developed his deep faith in Catholic teaching throughout his life. John attended the University of Kansas Medical School receiving his MD. In 1979. He then completed Anesthesia Residency at St. Luke's Medical Center in Kansas City and his Pediatric Anesthesia training in Los Angeles, CA.
John married Marja (Soikkeli) Dooner December 15, 1984. John and Marja moved to Toledo, OH, (not Toledo, Spain as Marja initially thought) April 1986. John became a practicing Anesthesiologist at St. Vincent Medical Center, now Mercy St. Vincent. John had a multitude of interests and hobbies, but most of all, he loved working as an Anesthesiologist, and was not eager to retire. He always introduced himself to his patients "Hi I am John from Anesthesia", to make people less anxious. Then later added I'm the Anesthesia Doc. John loved to read anything in periodical or anesthesia literature and always kept up his CME'S. He loved reading about W.W.I and W.W.II. His faith directed him to reach deeper into Catholic Literature.
John was an avid scuba diver. He dove mostly in the Caribbean Islands and had one memorable trip to Indonesia.
John participated in Medical missions to Africa with Operation Smile, and the Dominican Republic with local medical teams.
He was a member of the Toledo Club and the Inverness Club. John never learned to golf, he planned to do it once he "retired".
The support from John's friends all around the world has been great comfort during these devastating three weeks.
He is survived by his loving wife Marja (Soikkeli) Dooner; brother Gerad Dooner of Leavenworth, Kanas; nieces Mary Barton and Midge Barton-O'Conner of Brooklyn, New York; brother-in-law Colonel Seppo Soikkeli and family from Hameenlinna, Finland; sister-in-law Dr. Eva Soikkeli and family from Turku, Finland; sister-in-law Ritva Heinonen and Minna Heinonen from Helsinki, Finland; longtime friend Kaija Savola from Helsinki, Finland; best friends Dr. Clark O'Brian who passed December 1, 2023 and his spouse Matthew Koch, Esq who survives; faithful K-9 companions Frank, Musta, and Lacey; and a huge circle of friends and colleagues from Toledo, Kansas City, Finland, Ireland, and around the world.
