He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Miller Hunter and William Earl Hunter. He is survived by: his wife Adelaide Castle Hunter; his children, David Earl Hunter II, Jatrice "Gigi" Castle (Randy), Cynthia Anne Entler (Tom) and Rhonda Renee Hunter; and his great grandchildren, Matthew Eric Skiver, Elizabeth Arn, Andrew Castle, Daniel Castle and Mackenzie Penn. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
