He was predeceased by: his parents, Rufus McKinley "Mack" and Bertha Mae Mitchell (Banks); his grandsons, Gary Michael Davis and Arthur Ayler; his children-in-law, Gary Davis, John Davis, Rudolph Ayler and Tilvon Mitchell; and his siblings, Gladys, Beatrice "Bill", Edna, William "Pete", Gertrude "Molly", Katherine, Daniel, Bertha Mae, Charles and Eleanor.
He is survived by: his wife Medrith Mae Mitchell (Haithcock); his children, Herbert Mitchell, Jr. (April), Meredith Mitchell, Virginia Marshall (Daniel), Katherine Davis, Ethel Davis and Evelyn Dement-Thomas (Alonzo); his grandchildren, Stacey, Angel, Gabe, Susan, Wilson, Melissa, Miranda, Donald, Amanda, Serenity, Kasey, Shaye-Lyn and Robert, Jr.; and his siblings, Clara Gothard and Paul Mitchell (Sarah). He is also survived by twenty-one great grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren.
