He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Gunnels and Martha Gunnels (Saunders); his daughter Darlene; and his siblings, George, Ulys and Lillie Hayes.
He is survived by: his wife Erica Gunnels (Volkmann); his son Don Gunnels of Wooster; his stepchildren, Devin Thiem (Candi) of Valparaiso, IN and Robin Sinclair (Terry) of Brook Park; his daughters, Lisa Gunnels of Wooster, Mindy Odenkirk (Jon) of Charleston, SC and Stephanie Gunnels of Wooster; his sister Ruth Dheel of Rittman; and his sister-in-law Wilma Gunnels of West Salem. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
