He was predeceased by: his mother Edith Pinkerton (Howell). He is survived by: his wife Debra Magoto; and his sons, Troy Smedley (Shelly), Bryan Smedley and Mike Smedley (Traci). He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Calvary United Baptist Church in Thomas's memory.
