He was predeceased by: his wife Mary Ann Ronnebaum; his siblings, Aloys Sommer, Jr. and Dorothy Bertke; and his parents-in-law, Maryann Sommer, Giles and Eileen Ronnebaum.

He is survived by: his children, Carol Hipple (Mark), Kim Sommer (Mary) and Carl Sommer (Lisa); his grandchildren, Joshua Hipple (Caroline), Aaron Hipple, Leah Hipple, Sarah Hipple, John Sommer and Hudson Sommer; his great grandchild Georgia Hipple; his siblings, Donald Sommer, Albert Sommer (Marilyn) and Marilyn Heyne; his siblings-in-law, Marilyn Sommer and Urban Bertke; and his close friend Donna Herbert.

A Celebration of Life service is tentatively planned for June 2021 when hopefully Covid-19 restrictions will not be needed.
