He was predeceased by: his parents, John F. Mertz and Katherine Mertz (Behr); his wife Alma Mertz (Schulze); and his siblings, Robert, Thomas Mertz, Theresa Filey and Margaret Quinter.
He is survived by: his children, Norbert Mertz (Debbie) of Sidney, Gerald Mertz (Connie) of Piqua, Kenneth Mertz (Barb) of Celina, Ronald Mertz (Deb) of Oklahoma, Victor Mertz (Karen) of Sidney, Leon Mertz (Susan) of Minster and Rebecca Roznowski (Dan) of Wapakoneta; and his siblings, Bernard Mertz (Rosie) of Cridersville, Patrick Mertz (Kim) of Seattle, WA. and Adiline Mertz of Dayton. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren.
