He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernard J. Gerdau and Victorine A. Gerdau (Wautlet); and his siblings, Maxine Barrett, Patricia Irwin, Joanne Betrel, Thomas Gerdau and David Gerdau.

He is survived by: his siblings, Beverly Haroldsen, Gerald Gerdau and Cindy Edwards; his son Walter M. Gerdau; and his niece Norma Jean Leek.
