He was predeceased by: his parents, George Alfred and Harriet Geneva Atkinson, Sr. (Gavitt); his wife Betty M. Weis; his son Joseph M. Atkinson-Miller; his siblings, Eleanor Arnold, Lucille Haefling, Gertrude Childs, John and Atkinson; and his brother-in-law Joseph Von Der Weis.
He is survived by: his son Richard V. Atkinson-Miller (Katherine) of Newark; his grandchildren, Michael Joseph Miller of Belleville, MI, Tony Lee Miller of Newark, Tonya Lynn Miller of Newark and Shawna Maria Lovell (Ron) of Newark; his great grandchildren, Brian Miller, Keegan Miller, Darian Ritzius (Jared), Deyrek Lock, Brendon Lovell, Tonya Logan (Erick) and Alicia Miller; his great great grandchildren, Natalie, Avery, Maverick, Liam and Cade; his sister-in-law Eldeen Atkinson; and his pet Boots. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
