He was predeceased by: his parents, Roland Hess and Louise Hess; his brother Michael Hess; and his grandchildren, Carrington and Chandler Lather.

He is survived by: his wife Sue; his brother Russell David Hess; his children, Jeff (Dawn), Jennifer (Dominic), Julie (Thomas) and Jason (Tracy); his grandchildren, Beth (Ben), Brian (Kari), Jay (Andra), Marian (Ray), Cody, Dakota, Peyton, Tatum, Hayden (Ashlee), Lily, Morgan (Matt), Drew, Dylan and Lexi; and his great grandchildren, Katie, Lauren, Tyeler, Ryan, Sarah and Zach.
