He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Jr. and Mitsue Sugiyama Bates Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Rebecca "Becky" Bates; his sons, Michael Bates of Belpre and Mark Bates of Pickerington; and his sisters, Patty Bates of Hopewell and Tina Stanton (Steve) of Nashport. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
